Ella is 6!

Today is Ella’s birthday!
Photobucket
Yup! It is!

Photobucket

Today Ella is 6 years old!

Or 42 in dog years!

To celebrate her big day she got

Photobucket

a new collar and a new ball!
Spoiled pup.

Ella hasn’t had a new collar in two years (that’s a world record for her; she ruins the usual collar within weeks, thank goodness I discovered Dublin Dog collars) and though she didn’t really need a new one, I got her one anyway, because hey, it’s her birthday!

The new collar.

She also got some tasty dog cookies from our local pet store/bakery.
Because no birthday is complete without cookies!

Cookie time!

Today is also Thankful Thursday.
How great is that?
Today, on Ella’s birthday (and everyday, but today especially), we are thankful for Ella.
We’re grateful she’s so strong and healthy.
We’re grateful for her kisses and snuggles.
We’re grateful for her silly, wiggly dances, even if it does hurt like the dickens when you stand too close to her tail.
Yes, I did just say “hurt like the dickens”
Anyway.
We’re grateful for her hilarious “roo roo roooo”s and the way she’ll shimmy down a dirt hill on her back.
We’re grateful for her entire sweet self.
Especially her extremely soft ears.
:)

Happy Birthday, Ella!

Thank you Cokie the Cat for hosting this blog hop!

Today’s walk

Our morning walk today looked like this:

Photobucket
Well, that’s what the sky looked like. It was definitely brighter than that out. 😉

It was so cool and lovely out.
The dogs were surprisingly mellow.
That’s not to say that they didn’t run around and have a blast though.
They just weren’t as ZOOM! WHOOSH! as they usually are.
So, after they got a little running around done, our walk was pretty calm and peaceful.

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

Lassie was, of course, glued to my side (where the treat bag is!) after he played for his usual 2-10 seconds.

Petal and Ella, once they were done racing, hopped around, going from bush to bush, as they sniffed about.
Then we (we being me, my Mom, and Ella) came across this little guy:

Photobucket

Or girl.
I wouldn’t really know.
Speaking of me not knowing, I’m not entirely sure what he/she is.
Anyone know?
After doing a few Google searches he looks like a tiger salamander to me.
Though I don’t know what he was doing out there. There wasn’t any water in sight.
A few slightly (very slightly) rainy days and suddenly the salamanders are moving in. ;P

Walking in the rain

This morning when we woke for our walk, we found it was lightly raining.
But we figured, since this is Utah and all, that it would probably only rain for another five to ten minutes or so.
It wasn’t too hot or too cold.
So we took advantage of that and went for our walk.
It
rained
the
entire
time.
Of course it didn’t rain hard, but we got pretty wet anyway!
And oh so muddy!
It was wonderful!

At first the Collies weren’t so sure about this walking in the rain business.
“Get our fur wet? You’re joking, right?”
But then they realized it wasn’t so bad. In fact, it was nice and cool and refreshing!
Lassie played more than he usually does with Petal. She loved that.

Photobucket
We came home with two muddy and soggy Collies. Our bone dry and squeaky clean Mutt sure was happy she stayed home!

With the unfamiliar weather and the slight change in our walking routine (we usually walk the trail and then turn around and go back the way we came, but today we walked the trail and then went out onto the road and walked around the block instead (to get away from the slippery mud)), Petal was much more alert and would respond to me at the drop of a dime.
It made for one of those moments where you realize all your hard work with training really paid off.

Photobucket
Petal kept so busy on the trail. Everything smells stronger and different when wet! She loved sniffing everything.

Photobucket
“Alright, time for breakfast!”

We came home, dried the Collies, fed them breakfast, washed their muddy paws, and now they’re napping.
I think I might join them. 😉

Have a lovely weekend!

Mine! All mine!

Think your dog loves his/her dog food?
Well Lassie is sure that no dog has ever loved their food as much as he loves his.
Lassie says he’s willing to lay down his life for his food.
Don’t believe him?
Well, you’ll see for yourself.
But first, a little background on the subject.
Usually we order our dog food online for the price and the connivence, plus I can’t get a 40 pound bag of the food I feed anywhere in town.
So our dog food comes to the front door and Petal is always there to receive it and guard it away from Lassie and Ella.
Photobucket
May 2011
She’ll even open the package at times!

Photobucket
“Ooohhh, fooood!”

Petal has come to the firm belief that it is her job to guard any and all packages that smell like food until I have had the chance to put them away.
So naturally, when the food arrived yesterday, Petal went straight to work on guarding it.

Photobucket

Yesterday was a little different though, because yesterday Lassie decided that enough was enough. It was his food too and gosh darn it! HE was going to be the one to guard it!

So, ignoring Petal’s protests, Lassie climbed on top of the food and, figuring he may as well make himself comfortable risking his life, he laid his body across it to protect it.

Photobucket
“I’d like to see you try and get past me to take this food, Petal!”

Photobucket

These dogs crack me up.

Photobucket

I think they might be addicted to their dog food.
Is there a support group for that?

Happy Saturday, everyone!
Have a lovely weekend!
♥

Note: This blog post is not an endorsement, though it may seem that way. I was not asked nor paid to write this post. My dogs are just ridiculously obsessed with their food and I couldn’t resist sharing these pictures to prove it. 😉

A Lovely, Cloudy Thursday

Photobucket

Yesterday was very cloudy, breezy and cool.
It made for perfect Collie walking weather.
(Ella stayed home. She doesn’t come with us everyday, due to hip issues)
It also made for some fun photos for me. 😉

Photobucket

It wasn’t quite as dark as it appears in some of the photos.
It was, however, very beautiful and cool.

PhotobucketPhotobucket
“Ahh, cool wind through my fur!”

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket
Can you tell we walked in the early morning, before I could brush their hair? Bed head Collies! ;P

Photobucket

It was beautiful weather.
Wish we would have weather like this more often!

Spoiled Collie and a Fur Bunny

This is Petal,
PhotobucketPhotobucket
She is spoiled.

This is a Fur Bunny,
Photobucket
It’s made of the undercoat from Lassie’s neck.

This is Lassie,
Photobucket
He’s hairy handsome.

(Thankfully you are not obligated to laugh at my awfur awful jokes)

Petal’s not as spoiled (yes she is, don’t believe that) as she is a spot thief. The moment you get up from your seat and walk a good four steps away, she’ll be in your spot. Then when you come back for your spot she’ll look at you with these innocent eyes as if to say, “What? I was here first.” or, “Surely you wouldn’t make such a sweet little Collie move?”
So you find someplace else to sit.

As for that Fur Bunny, it all came from Lassie’s mane.
While he was on a train.
To Spain.
In the rain.
While he napped on the floor (a few weeks ago), I took the undercoat rake to him and made that lovely little Fur Bunny.
Then I took pictures of it, because, well, c’mon, who wouldn’t take pictures of something like that?
I needed proof of the great amount of hair that came just from his neck!
His neck is so silky smooth now.

Review: Nite Dawg Collar

Photobucket

With Summer upon us, we’ve been taking our walks in the early morning hours or late evening/night hours to avoid the heat. In the morning we wear sunscreen to protect us from getting sunburned (yes, the dogs, too! They wear sunscreen on their noses) and at night we take a flash light to protect us from going unseen. I had thought about getting a reflective collar for the dogs, but figured it wouldn’t be very noticeable on the hairy Collies.

So when I got the opportunity to review the Nite Dawg Collar, an LED collar from SafetyGearOnline, I jumped at the chance.
Photobucket
“Look at this! I glow!”

Petal took it for a test walk and was glowing with pride as she wore it.
Ha. Ha.
Ha.
Anyway.
It was perfect, even with her abundance of fur it glowed very brightly, illuminating her fur and making her highly visible.

It was a little after 8 PM when we started our walk and about 10 PM when we finished. It was good and dark even with the cars and street lamps, but Petal was easy to spot with her glowing red neck!
These pictures were taken after 9 PM (note that it wasn’t actually as dark outside as it appears in these photos, the camera settings contributed to some of the darkness ;)).

The Nite Dawg Collar has two settings, glow and flash.
The collar can be turned on by pressing the button near the D ring. Press it once and it’ll glow, press it again to make it flash, and again to turn it off.
You can see the collar on both settings, glow and flash, in this video:

(If you’re sensitive to flashing lights, ridiculously cute mixed breeds, or the color red, you may not want to watch this video ;)).

The light source is removable for resizing and washing the collar.
To resize the collar you simply remove the light source, adjust the nylon collar to the appropriate size for your dog, size the light source by lining it up with the collar and then cutting off the excess light source. Replace the light source back in the collar and you’re done!

The Nite Dawg Collar is weather resistant and comes with a replaceable battery. They are available in three adjustable sizes, small, medium and large. SafetyGearOnline also offers an LED leash and other night safety collars.

All in all, it’s a fantastic product. I have no complaints and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who ventures out into the night with their dog. It’s a must have!

Disclosure: I was contacted by SafetyGearOnline.com and was asked to review the Nite Dawg collar in exchange for one Nite Dawg collar. All opinions are entirely my own.
