Review, Giveaway & Recipe

Hi all! Petal here! We have a treat review to share today and I told Mom that since I’m the one who taste tests them, I should be the one to write the review. She agreed.

Chewy.com sent me some tasty treats from a company called Fromm. They make all dry foods, canned foods and treats for us dogs. They make cat food too, but who cares about cats. All their foods and treats are made in the USA! Me and Mom have heard lots of good things about them, but we’ve never tried them before now.

Chewy sent me my very own 6 oz baggie of Fromm treats. They even put my name on the box. Says right here it’s for Petal.

addressedtoPETAL

They only put Mom’s name on it so she wouldn’t feel left out. They’re considerate folks at Chewy.

First things first when you get a package you gotta open it! My second favorite part!

openitttt2

My very favorite part is finding what lies inside. I have to say, I was very bewildered by these treats at first. My Mom thought it was funny, apparently she requested this flavor just to confuse me! There’s a word for that and it’s R-U-D-E (because Mom won’t let me use strong language, something about being a family friendly blog).

Now Mom insists on relaying the whole embarrassing conversation I had with her out in the yard…

Don’t laugh guys. I didn’t want to eat some strange cranberry hybrid’s liver. I didn’t see the comma in these here ingredients:

Wheat flour, cranberry COMMA liver, salt, garlic powder.

That’s it! According to the ingredient list on Chewy.com, the liver is chicken liver.

My Our (Mom just insists on being included) favorite things about these treats:

Low calorie (just 1 calorie per treat!) (this is obviously MOM’S favorite thing)
They’re made in Wisconsin with Wisconsin cranberries
They’re made with delicious liver (my favorite thing, Mom says “ick”)
They’re bite sized (about the size of a quarter) and perfect for training
They’re a fair price
They don’t stink and they don’t make Mom’s hands smelly

tastytreat

Things to consider:

They’re a crunchy treat, not a soft one, so if you’re looking for a soft training treat, this is not it.
The actual bag does not state what animal the liver is sourced from, so I’m just assuming that Chewy is correct and it’s chicken liver; the only reason I’m pointing this out is because I know some dogs are sensitive to certain meat sources, so sensitive doggies should be aware of that.

Time to turn the blog back over to Mom, she has a treat recipe she wants to share with you all.

XOXO Petal

Last night I whipped up some dog cookies for Petal and I thought I would share the haphazard recipe with you all. Now I’m just guessing with these measurements because, uh, I rarely measure my ingredients when it comes to dog cookies. Measuring stuff = having to wash the measuring cups. Um, no thanks.

Here we go. Petal’s Fish and Fruit Cookies.

You will need:

About 2 1/2 or 3 cups of the flour of your choice (I used wheat and the last of the coconut flour that we had, but I know a lot of you pups have wheat allergies, so use whatever floats your boat!)

1/4 cup canned pumpkin (plain pumpkin. Nothin’ but pumpkin)

1/2 cup (about) Cranberries

1 cup..ish Pineapple chunks

Salmon oil

a few pinches of Parsley (I used fresh parsley because I had it on hand and it needed to be used)

Preheat your oven to 350º.
Throw the cranberries, pineapple chunks and parsley (if using fresh) in a blender with either water or the pineapple juice if using canned pineapple and puree well. Pour it into a mixing bowl with the flour and salmon oil (I used 4 pumps of Grizzly Salmon oil, but feel free to substitute or skip the oil all together or, if you have some canned salmon on hand, puree it and use that (I plan on doing this next time)) and mix well, adding more flour or more water as needed to make a good dough. Too sticky? You need more flour. Too hard and dry? You need more water.

Roll the dough out and cut with cookie cutters or use a pizza slicer to make squares (I used the pizza slicer because we didn’t have any cookie cutters small enough for what I wanted (bite sized cookies)). Place cookies on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and bake. I baked mine at 350º for about 20 minutes before lowing the heat to about 200º, at which point I just peeked at them every so often and gave them a little poke. Once they felt a little bit crunchy, I turned the oven off and left the cookies in over night to cool.

fruitfishcookies

Have you ever seen an uglier batch of cookies? This is what happens when I’m too tired to roll the dough out nicely. It also helped that I used our poor, lame pizza slicer too slice them. Our pizza slicer is so incredibly bent that it can no longer go in a straight line, it swerves and wobbles pathetically. Our pizzas’ look just as pretty.

This morning the cookies were nice and cold and I broke them apart easily and dumped them into Petal’s cookie jar. The cookies on the outer edges were nice and crunchy while the middle pieces were softer and chewy. They also smelled really good, very fruity, if there wasn’t salmon oil in them I would taste them, but I think the salmon oil would add a weird taste that I would not enjoy. Petal seems to love them though!

Tasty Tuesday: Tasty Reviews

Today is our first time joining the Tasty Tuesday blog hop. This blog hop is hosted by Sugar the Golden Retriever and Kol’s Notes. Go check them out to learn more!

Before we tell you all about some super tasty treats, we must apologize to Chewy.com for the major delay in posting this review. I’m incredibly sorry to everyone at Chewy for the delay. I can’t thank you all enough for your kindness, patience and understanding. I hope you guys can forgive me for the delay in reviewing these products.

Now for the review. We have freeze dried dog treats, freeze dried dog food, and canned cat food. Yes, you read that right, cat food!

Let’s start with the treats.
reviewNVIminitreats

These are Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Boost Minis from Chewy.com. Or chicken flavored freeze dried raw dog treats.

The ingredients are:
“Chicken (Including Ground Chicken Bone), Turkey, Turkey Liver, Turkey Heart, Pumpkinseeds, Apples, Carrots, Butternut Squash, Ground Flaxseed, Montmorillonite Clay, Broccoli, Lettuce, Spinach, Dried Kelp, Apple Cider Vinegar, Parsley, Honey, Salmon Oil, Mixed Tocopherols, Olive Oil, Rosemary Extract, Blueberries, Alfalfa Sprouts, Persimmons, Inulin, Rosemary, Sage, Clove”

They’re grain free, contain no corn, wheat, soy, or gluten. They come in a 3.25 ounce resealable (score!) bag.

Their size and the fact that they’re low in calories (only 2 calories per piece!) make them perfect for training! They can be crumbly, but nothing too bad. They’re soft and delicious (according to Petal, cousin Penny, and even the cat cousins; I did not try them, so you’ll just have to take their word for it).

reviewpetalNVItreats

Not only are they perfect for training, but they’re great to bribe a finicky pet to eat! Petal and Penny never need bribes to finish a meal, but Harriet the cat needs a bribe from time to time. She was absolutely bonkers for these treats. She even snatched them out of my pocket, which you can see here in this video:

Yeah, I helped her out a little. It was either help her or suffer her wrath. Eep.

Petal ADORED these treats, everyone did! I liked that they’re low in calories, made in the USA, came in a resealable bag, and were a huge crowd pleaser.

Also, for you cat owners, they do make cat treats too!

Next up is Orijen Freeze Dried dog food from Chewy.com. Petal tried the Tundra version which is made with a variety of venison, elk, bison, quail and steelhead trout.

reviewharriettundra

Harriet wants to know why Petal gets all the good stuff.

We received a 6 ounce bag of medallions (approximately 12 medallions). Their key benefits, as listed on Chewy.com are:

Key Benefits

  • High-protein, low-carbohydrate formula
  • Freeze-dried to lock in flavor and nutritional value
  • Preservative-free
  • Balanced meal perfect for daily feeding
You can find the ingredient list here.
The feeding instructions only go up to a dog of 33 pounds with the suggestion of feeding an additional 1 1/2 medallions per additional 11 pounds. A 33 pound dog would eat about 7 medallions a day, Petal is just shy of 50. So Petal would need about 9.25 – 9.5 medallions a day. Since I didn’t want to use the whole bag in one day, I just gave Petal one mediallion a day in addition to her regular food (homemade).
revieworijenfreezedriedfood
Rehydrating instructions as listed on the side of the bag:
  1. Place Orijen medallions into a clean dish and break into quarters.
  2. Pour 1/4 cup of warm water over each medallion. Water should be warm to the touch but not hot, around 55°C/130°F is ideal.
  3. Stirring will speed hydration time.
  4. Medallions will rehydrate in 3-5 minutes and are best served when soft throughout.

I followed the instructions and found them to be true, though I only ever rehydrated one medallion at a time. I’m not sure if it would make a difference in time if you were to rehydrate several. I’m sure it wouldn’t so long as you added 1/4 cup of water for each medallion. For the sake of the photo I warmed a quarter cup of water in a tea kettle, but I’m sure warm water from the tap would work just as well.

Personally I thought they were a little bit stinky, but Petal L-O-V-E-D it. I gave her one every evening with her usual food until they were gone (so almost for 2 full weeks, but not quite). I was expecting, when she first tried one, for her to have a little bit of an upset stomach, just because it was new, but that never happened. Likely because she never ate more than one at a time, but even so, I was impressed.

This food would be far too expensive for me to feed to Petal exclusively and, I’ll be honest, I would never buy it for that purpose. However, I have no problem with the idea of buying it for her as an occasional treat to have with her usual meal, since she enjoyed it SO much. The ingredients are great, it’s a breeze to prepare, and Petal really loved it. Bu it’s too pricey for us to feed exclusively or on a regular basis.

Now for the cat food!

The cats of the house got to taste-test Nature’s Variety: Pride by Instinct canned cat food from Chewy.com.

By cats of the house, I mean two out of three of them, one of them is incredibly stubborn and won’t eat canned food unless it’s Friskies. Since he’s been living in this house much longer than any of us, he gets what he wants (most of the time).

The girls, however, were eager to taste this new food.

We got 4 3oz cans. 2 in the chicken flavor and 2 in the salmon flavor. 1 flaked and 1 minced in each flavor.

reviewpridecatfood

Pride is a grain-free and gluten-free cat food. There’s no corn, wheat, or soy and they’re made in the USA!

Plus check out the ridiculously adorable labels and flavor names. So. Dang. Cute.

reviewcatfoodtesters

The girls loved both flavors, but Harriet loved the chicken flavor best while Moonlight (Moony for short) simply loved going back and forth between the two flavors. She would take one bite of the chicken, then a bite of the salmon, then back to chicken, then back to salmon. It was too funny. They loved it so much that I added Nature’s Variety to their regular, daily diet. I added a different line from Nature’s Variety though, simply because it agreed with my budget better than the Pride line. If it wasn’t for that, I would’ve added Pride specifically.

The kitties simply loved this food. It was a huge hit. These finicky cats gobbled up every last meaty bite and licked up every drop of delicious gravy. It is on the pricey side if you have multiple cats though. Still, we would highly recommend it to our cat friends!

As for Chewy.com, we can not recommend them enough. They’re wonderful people for so many reasons. They’re generous and kind and fantastic to work with. I’m saying this as both a reviewer and a regular customer. I purchase from Chewy.com on a monthly basis. They have the best prices on the cat food we feed, the kibble cousin Penny eats and the supplements I give Petal. We also buy many of our other pet supplies from Chewy.

I’ve only had to contact customer service twice and both times they were very kind and very prompt. On one occasion I had to contact them about some canned cat food I ordered. The sent me the exact flavor and brand I had ordered, but it was canned dog food rather than cat food. I emailed them to let them know of the mix up and they promptly sent out the cat food and instead of asking for the case of canned dog food back, they told me to donate the dog food to a local shelter or rescue group. I was very touched by that and so was the rescue group I donated it to. They were very grateful and hopeful that the canned food would help bribe some of the dogs in their care to take their medications. Thank you Chewy.com!

Review: True Chews from Chewy.com!

 photo Chewy-logo.png

Today we are doing a review of True Chews from Chewy.com!

 photo petalchewyreviewbox.png
“Open it, oh Thumbed One!”

The lovely folks at Chewy.com sent us 1 bag of Lils pig ears and 1 six inch bully stick to try.

 photo petalchewyreviewtreats.png

The Lils pig ears are for dogs 20 lbs and under. In our case they made the perfect sampling size!
There were three ears in the bag plus one teeny tiny one.

 photo c7849b43-3bf5-4cb2-8af8-51341b614759.jpg

 photo petalchewyreviewpigears.png

They’re a pretty decent size. I bet a small dog would be in heaven and get lots of chewing time from it. Lassie and Petal finished them off in under 5 minutes. They LOVED them. I loved that they’re made in the USA. But the little hairs still on the ear made me cringe. My dogs have had pig ears before (usually when I take them to a pet store and they snatch one off the shelf or I tell them to “pick something!” That’s what they usually go for), but I’ve never noticed little hairs. Then again, I’ve never looked too closely either. 😉

 photo petalchewyyummypigear.png

They’re a very messy treat. I was glad I had Petal and Lassie (trust me he got some, in fact, he got 2 of the 3; I just didn’t get any decent pictures) eat them on the kitchen floor/their dog cot.

 photo 79fdaa7f-e006-4e25-989a-66f026a2985f.jpg
“Licking crumbs off the floor is a little difficult with an overbite.”

I gave the bully stick to Petal, since Lassie got 2 of the 3 pig ears.
It was a very thin little bully stick and it only lasted her about 8 minutes! Six inch bully sticks usually last my dogs somewhere between 20-60 minutes depending on thickness (yes, I hear you giggling ;P).

 photo 5601adb8-27f1-44c4-a782-66fa2389b76d.jpg
Thin little bully stick.

These bully sticks would be perfect for little dogs/dogs that aren’t strong chewers at all. They wouldn’t be worth the money for us though. I expect the pricey chews to last a minimum of 20 minutes. This didn’t even last half that.
On the plus side, I didn’t notice any smell and I sat right next to Petal as she ate it.

Lassie & Petal give the pig ears 3 1/2 out of 4 paws up for deliciousness and being made in the USA. They’re a little pricey though.
 photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png photo halfpawrate2.png

Petal gives the bully stick 1 paw up. It was tasty and made in the USA, but it was gone in a flash; not for strong chewers.
 photo pawprintrating2.png

While I wouldn’t buy True Chews’ bully sticks for my dogs, I would happily buy any of their other treats, and I do think their bully sticks would be the perfect size for soft chewers/small dogs.

Of course Chewy.com still has all our love. Our package arrived promptly and the goodies were packaged well.
The dogs get excited when a package from Chewy.com comes. Even the cats come running to see if it’s their usual order of food.

Review: Devotion spray from Viva La Dog Spa

Today we are reviewing Devotion dog spray from Viva La Dog Spa!

Viva La Dog Spa makes— yes, you guessed it: dog grooming supplies such as shampoos, conditioners, sprays, and more.
Viva La Dog Spa has a fun and pretty French look and a adorable Poodle mascot, Lilly Claire.
Their products are made with Solar Power and their bottles, labels, bands and pumps are recyclable! They also pre-cycle whenever possible. You can read more that here.

A little about Devotion and what it was named for:
“Because there’s no one more loyal than your dog, we named our new designer fragrance, DEVOTION. DEVOTION is not only the main characteristic of our dogs, it’s our promise to them too – to be devoted! It’s a relaxing blend of soft floral scents that’s both playful and feminine. Imagine a light mist of fresh flowers with the soft, clean scent of raspberry on a warm day. It’s a winner!”

Our bottle of Devotion arrived wrapped up sweetly.
 photo devotionspray.png

It comes in a decent sized bottle at 6 Fl. Oz. The bottle itself has a simple and pretty look.
Pretty also describes the scent. It’s a very pretty scent. It smells so pretty that I refrained from using it on Lassie. He says it’s bad enough I named him “girl”, I don’t need to go and make him smell like one too. 😉

It smells nicer than most human perfumes. I’m tempted to use it on myself.
In fact, I did. I sprayed a bit of it on each wrist, just to sample it before I sprayed it on Petal. I have really sensitive skin and I didn’t want to spray something I could potentially be allergic to on Petal, seeing as I’m often rubbing my face against her fur and kissing on her.

 photo petaldevotion.png

Unfortunately the scent only seems to last about two days.
It took a few tries to get the spray nozzle to work that first time, but after that it has worked like a charm! Although, it doesn’t spray the way I was expecting it to. It doesn’t drench Petal or come out in a stream or anything, it just doesn’t come out in the really light, but wide spread, misty spray I expected it to. Because of this it only covers a small area of fur, but if I rub it around I can get it to cover a larger area.

I haven’t had any severe reactions to it, but (and it very well may be just me, I am sensitive to some perfumes, so I’m keeping that in mind), it is strong at first. Petal doesn’t always appreciate it that much when it first goes on, but after I rub it in it doesn’t seem to bother her. I never use more than one spritz.

The ingredients of this fragrance are no where to be found. They’re top secret. So this spray may or may not be a suitable fit for dogs with allergies.

 photo devotionspray2.png
Pretty little bottle, isn’t it?

Our over all rating of Viva La Dog Spa’s Devotion spray:
I give it 4 out of 5 hearts; it smells so pretty, but initially it’s rather strong (so it may not be a good choice for the really sensitive type). I almost feel funny about spraying it on Petal because it smells so much like a human perfume, LOL.
 photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png

Petal gives it 2 1/2 out of 4 paws, ’cause that first spray sometimes makes her sneeze a big sneezie.
 photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png photo halfpawrate2.png

To be perfectly honest, unless someone directly asked me about it (“Your dog smells so good! What did you use? Where can I get it?” for example), this wouldn’t be the first grooming splash/spray I would recommend.

Check out Viva La Dog Spa to learn more about them and their products.
You can also find them on Twitter and Facebook.

Review: Orijen Freeze Dried Treats from Chewy.com

 photo Chewy-logo.png

I love Chewy.com and was thrilled to work with them again for this review.
Chewy.com has many brands of pet food to offer. They also offer treats, toys, clean up supplies, leashes, collars, and much more.
My favorite thing about Chewy.com would have to be their customer service. I order our cat food from them (it’s so much cheaper at Chewy.com than anywhere else, another plus!) and have had to contact customer service on two occasions and both times they were very prompt and incredibly kind. They didn’t make me want to pull my hair out and they didn’t make me feel like it was my fault.

Chewy.com asked us to review Orijen Freeze Dried treats.
Chewy.com offers Orijen’s dog food, cat food, and dog treats. Orijen’s foods and treats are made in Canada.
We were sent the Original flavor of their freeze dried treats. Here’s a description of them from Chewy.com:

No lazy lap dogs here… these treats are just for the rough-and-tumble, ready-to-wag pups. Orijen Original Freeze-Dried Dog Treats are filled with tasty chicken, turkey, and flounder to provide your pet with a protein-rich snack that’s made without any preservatives, fillers, or artificial flavors. Each grain-free treat only has seven calories, and is freeze-dried to lock in all of the nutritional content and flavor. 5 Star reviews across the board!

Key Benefits

  • Made with high-quality protein sources
  • Preservative-free
  • Grain-free
  • Low-calorie, freeze-dried dog treats

 photo orijenfreezedried.png

They’re basically the dog equivalent of cat nip (or crack).
My dogs went insane for these treats.
I’m not kidding. I could probably train them to back flip for them.
Look at this crazed look Lassie got in his eyes:
 photo musthavelass.png

And Petal, or Miss Talks A Lot, is more quick to end her loud conversations (complete with obnoxious “dancing”) with neighborhood dogs when I bring these treats on our walks. Which quickly made them a five star training treat in my eyes.

 photo patiencepetal.png

Even Petal’s picky friend Pepper devoured half of one and then demanded the other half. This dog usually won’t take any dog treats from me.

 photo pickypepper.png

They’re soft treats. You can easily pinch smaller pieces off of it. They crumble easily and would probably work well to bribe finicky eaters to eat their dinner. That also makes them a bit messy though, but my dogs will happily lick up every last crumb.

 photo orijentreat.png
 photo goingforgold.png

They don’t have a super strong odor (which is a big plus), but they aren’t something you want to go inhaling deep breaths of. Unless you’re a dog, of course.

 photo wanttreatlassie.png photo ofcoursetreat.png photo lassorijen.png photo yumlassorijen.png
While my dogs love how these treats taste, I love that they’re high quality and the ingredients are simple:
Cobb chicken liver, turkey liver, boneless Cobb chicken, boneless turkey, boneless flounder.

That’s it! That’s all that’s in them.

They only down side to them is, they are rather pricey. Though I suppose that’s to be expected for a high quality treat.

The dogs give them 4 out of 4 paws for deliciousness.
 photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png

I give them 5 out of 5 hearts for their high quality.
 photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png

And 4 hearts for cost.
 photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png

Overall, we really loved these treats! We would definitely buy them and recommend them to our friends. Next time you’re in need for a high quality training treat, head over to Chewy.com!

Learning to back flip (just kidding).

Review // Giveaway // Contest: KONG Treats

We’ve got a lot to share with you all in this post!
We’ll start with the review first.
 photo reviewtext.png
We love our KONG toys, so when opportunity came knocking we jumped on the chance to review KONG Treats!JAKKS Pacific, Inc. recently partnered with KONG to create their USA Made, All Natural Premium Treat line.
We received these three tasty treats to review:
lassiekongtreats

Sweet Potato Stix, Chew Buddies (variety pack) and Mini Meaty Bites (in beef).

They are all corn free, wheat free, soy free and contain no animal by products or artificial colors. They were all made in the USA! We love USA made treats!

Mini Meaty Bites are soft, bite-sized treats (or swallow-size in the case of my meaty-treat-loving dogs). They’re a quick but tasty reward; perfect for training. They come in beef and chicken.

They’re also shaped like little KONG toys which I think is cute.

lassiekongmeatybites
“I could care less what it is shaped like, give it to me!”

They smell very strongly (but not badly, if you ask me, they smell like beef jerky) and the dogs go wild for them, another great quality for a training treat. They’re very soft and easy to break in half, you know, if small is not small enough. 😉

“Nom nom nom.”

They’re about $5 on Amazon for a 4.5 oz bag.

Sweet Potato Stix are a soft and chewy vegetarian treat.
 photo lassiedroolingforKONG.png
As you can probably tell by Lassie’s drool (I was so amused to find that when importing pictures from camera to computer), they were delicious!
These treats are easy to break into smaller pieces, if desired, and are great for training or hiding in a KONG Genius toy (the Leo in particular).

“Mmmm, delicious!”I did expect them to be a little longer, simply because of the word “stix” plus in images they do look longer. But that’s not a problem, I would’ve broken them anyway. ;)They’re about $7 on Amazon for a 6.5 oz bag.Chew Buddies “Long Lasting Chews are the perfect way to treat your dog and help clean their teeth as well.”

We received a variety pack with 4 large Chew Buddies inside. Chew Buddies come in three different flavors to choose from: Chicken (porcupine and cow pictured), Fresh Breath (alligator), and Bacon ((adorable) dinosaur).

They smelled alright to me, but they must’ve smelled amazing to the animals because 2 out of three cats came running when I opened the bag and dumped them out for pictures.

Petal was my first taste tester. I let her pick which one she wanted to try.

Moony the cat wants one too!

Petal chose the chicken flavored cow and promptly chewed it’s head off.

Look! It has a little belly button! Hehe.

The chew lasted a little longer than expected, about 5 or so minutes.
She greatly enjoyed it, licking up all the crumbs she left and begging for another.

I gave Lassie the Bacon Dino to try and he gobbled it up happily.

Front

Back

Lassie gobbled it up in about five minutes and licked up every crumb. I think it’s safe to say he greatly enjoyed it.

As you can see from the picture above, it’s not a solid treat. For my dogs, it’s not a long lasting chew, but I didn’t expect it to be. I only expected for my dogs to enjoy chewing it, which they did!
I can’t claim it did anything to clean their teeth; they each have had only one so far. I would think, however, that long term use would provide dental benefits.
The large chews come in a package of 4 and the small chews come in a package of 10. The large chews go for about $13 on Amazon.

The only thing I was disappointed in with these chews was that I didn’t get an adorable piggy chew in my bag. :(
;P

Lassie and Petal give Mini Meaty Bites 4 out of 4 paws up for tastiness!
 photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png

I give them 4 1/2 out of 5 hearts.
 photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo halfheartrate2.png

Lassie and Petal give Sweet Potato Stix 3 paws up!
 photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png

I give them 4 hearts.
 photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png

Lassie and Petal give Chew Buddies 4 paws up!
 photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png photo pawprintrating2.png

I give them 4 1/2 hearts.
 photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo halfheartrate2.png

I would definitely consider buying the Mini Meaty Bites and the Chew Buddies. The Sweet Potato Stix are great and my dogs love them, but I tend to go for the meaty treats first. Plus I try to give very little of anything sweet potato to Petal. As a puppy, for whatever reason, her tummy was a little sensitive to sweet potatoes. I’m not sure if it still is. She did just fine with the Sweet Potato Stix, but like I said, I limited her to just 1 or 1 1/2 every few days. Lassie gobbled up many of them though and really enjoys them. I would consider buying them for use in our KONG Genius.

Review & Giveaway: Happytails Spa from Vitacost.com

Today we are reviewing the services of Vitacost.com and two of the products they have to offer: Happytails Spa’s Sleepytime Tonic and Happytails Spa’s Fur Butter.

 photo 0ef3f4d3-e784-403c-90ca-8d35b588695a.jpg

Vitacost.com is an online store where you can buy discount vitamins and other health care supplies for yourself and your pet! They have a large variety of brands to offer and excellent customer service.
Our package arrived in an adequate amount of time and the box it came in even had a recipe for gluten free cookies on it, neat! However, it was a rather large box for the two little items I had and they were both just freely rolling around in it. Both my items were in good shape regardless, nothing broken and nothing open. When I asked them about it, I was assured that they otherwise package their products very well.

Vitacost.com is easy to navigate, they have a large variety of brands to choose from and great prices.

Now we are already long time fans of the Happytails Spa products, especially their Fur Butter, a deep conditioner. That stuff is pure magic for Lassie and Petal’s coats.
As you probably know, Petal recently had a bath. She was covered in dirt and debris from outside. Like foxtails, dreaded foxtails. We really hate those itchy, sharp little nasties. In the past I’ve never really used the Fur Butter on Petal, who is already fairly easy to brush, but this last bath I did. While she did not enjoy standing in the tub for ten minutes while it worked it’s magic (for best results, you must leave the Fur Butter in their fur for 5-10 minutes before rinsing, and it really does make a difference), I however greatly enjoyed that the Fur Butter did some of the work for me. The majority of the foxtails rinsed right out of her fur as I rinsed out the Fur Butter and what remained was easily brushed out as I blow dried her. So much easier than usual.
I’ve already been a long time lover of Fur Butter when it comes to Lassie. It makes him so soft and so much easier to brush. It’s amazing for any stubborn tangles. Love it, love it, love it.

Lassie after yesterday’s bath.

Being a conditioner it doesn’t suds up as you rub it in, but you can feel it, so it’s easy to feel where you have and haven’t applied it. As you rinse it out, it suds/bubbles up a bit which is really convenient for knowing where you’ve rinsed it all out and where you haven’t.
It works best on long coats, from my experience. I used it once on Ella and while it did make her a tad softer, it felt pointless to use it on her short coat. I never use it on her again and I wouldn’t use it on Penny, simply because there is no real need.
While it smells amazing while using it, the scent seems to get rinsed out for the most part. But at least it smelled great while you worked and my dogs do smell good afterwards, just not as great as, let’s say, opening the container and taking a whiff (yes, I have been know to do this often. It smells incredible, okay? ;P).

While I’ve been a fan of Fur Butter for awhile, I had never tried the Sleepytime Tonic before now.
Sleepytime Tonic is a herbal remedy made to calm nervous, anxious or over active dogs without making them sleepy. I’ve looked into it many times for Lassie’s fear of thunder and fireworks and for Ella’s general nervousness, but I never got around to actually buying a bottle of it. So I was pretty excited to finally try this stuff. Especially since Penny has put Ella to shame as far as the constant nervous energy goes.
Penny goes bonkers whenever it’s feeding time. For anyone. The cats, the humans, but especially when it’s her own feeding time. She literally screams and cries and barks. We have to put her in a crate while we dish the food out or else she’ll just go crazy running and pacing and jumping anxiously around the family room. I thought with time she would get over it, and maybe she still will, but she has been with us for months now and there was no improvement before Sleepytime Tonic. I’ve noticed some improvement since using it.
Sleepytime Tonic can be used twice daily or as needed. Penny has been getting it twice daily for past three weeks (tomorrow will mark 3 weeks). Petal gets some only when she needs it. The amount you give is based on the weight of your dog.
It seems to work best if I give it to Penny 20-30 minutes before feedings, directly in her mouth. Luckily she will eat anything, so she happily allows me to squirt some in her mouth with the dropper. At first I was hiding it in her food, thinking that would be easier, but as the bottle says, it does work best if put directly in their mouth.
Penny still cries at feeding time, but it’s not as bad and her frenzy is not as intense. I went a weekend without it just to see and I noticed she was much more tense and desperate.
I know I’ve mentioned before that Petal has a fear of popping gum and my sister has a gum popping addiction. Not a great combo. Petal paces, pants, and crawls on top of or behind me or any place she feels she can hide. I was really hoping Sleepytime Tonic would help her with this. She won’t happily take it like Penny will, but she doesn’t fight me when I lift her lip and squirt it in her mouth. Before I would hide her under a blanket and rub her, which would sometimes help. That combined with the Sleepytime Tonic was excellent. It worked so well and pretty quickly too. I was very happy with the results and as the bottle says, it didn’t put her or Penny to sleep. It just aided in calming them down.

“She’s lying. Nothing scares me.”

I didn’t get a chance to try it on Lassie (no thunder or fireworks since the arrival of Sleepytime Tonic), but I think it may be just the trick.

While Sleepytime Tonic wasn’t the cure-all for Penny (I wasn’t expecting it to be either) it has helped. As for Petal, it has helped her a lot, which I am very grateful for!

Overall, I give Vitacost.com 4 1/2 out of 5 hearts for their easy to navigate website, great prices and their kind customer service. I docked half a point for the packaging, but only half since it seems to have been just a fluke.

I give Fur Butter a million 5 hearts for effectiveness (and it’s incredible scent ;)).

Review: Maqnifiscent Grooming and Finishing Splash

 photo cottoncandy4_summer2013.png

It’s summer time, a time for swimming and carnivals and cotton candy.
Delicious cotton candy.

 photo cottoncandyy_summer2013.png

I don’t know about you, but I think cotton candy smells amazing. So sweet and pleasant.
More things should smell like cotton candy.
For example, Collies.
Collies should smell like cotton candy.

Today we’re reviewing Maqnifiscent Grooming and Finishing Splash in the Cotton Candy scent.
Yes, my dogs smell like cotton candy.

 photo cottoncandy3_summer2013.png

Maqnifiscent Grooming and Finishing Splash comes in many different unique scents such as Dark Chocolate, Raspberry Bubble Gum, Pina Colada and others. They even offer custom* fragrances!

 photo cottoncandymaqnifiscent.png

Here’s what they have to say about their product:
“Maqnifiscent Grooming & Finishing Splash is a non-toxic multi-purpose unisex formula that has been designed to keep your pet and home smelling Maqnifiscent. This product instantly eliminates odors and conditions and detangles your pet’s coat while keeping your loved one fresh between baths.  Our preparation contains a long-lasting, non-sticky, first of its kind, scratch-n-smell formula that is immediately reactivated when you comfort your pet or they rub themselves.  All of our fragrances are alcohol and paraben free. It can be used as often as necessary.”
You can read a little more about the company here.

 photo cottoncandysplash.png
Made in the USA! Yay!

When I was first contacted about this product I had my doubts about it’s scratch-n-smell ability. I was worried about what would go into this bottle to give it such an ability. But according to their FAQ page all their splashes are made up of “… a food-grade based gelatin, water, and Virgin Coconut Oil which conditions the skin while keeping the coat shiny.”

Sounds good to me!
And guess what?
It works. And it really does smell like cotton candy. I crave it every time I spray it.
I sprayed some on Petal’s back, chest, each side, and back end and rubbed it in. Probably didn’t need that much, I went a little crazy with it. But it made her smell wonderful and it lasted for several days, nearly a week, even after being rolled through the dirt by Penny. Several times.
And it really does work like a scratch and sniff!
One day my sister buried her face in Petal’s hair and claimed she couldn’t smell the cotton candy. I told her to try petting her a little first. She looked at me like I was insane. “What is she, a scratch and sniff?”
I smirked, we were about to find out, “Just try it!”
She did and her eyes were rather wide when it actually worked.
The more you pet Petal the more she smells like cotton candy.
Love. It.
While the bottle claims that it works best on short haired dogs, it seemed to last longer on Lassie and Petal than it did on Penny. The spray lasted 5-7 days on both Petal and Lassie, but on Penny it only seems to last about 2-3 days. I really feel that that may have something to do with the fact that she hates to be sprayed with anything. So while Lassie and Petal get 3-4 spritz on various parts of their body, Penny gets 1 or even just half a spritz before she runs off. It’s too bad, because she needs it the most if you ask me. Smelly dog.
 photo pennysmelly.png
“I resent that. I do not smell.”

Regardless of that, it is the most effective dog body splash I have ever used on my dogs. It’s also the best smelling one and the most cost effective one, too. I’ve had previous sprays that were $9.99 or more for a tiny little 2 or 4 ounce bottle. This bottle was a very impressive size at 8 fl. oz. for $12.99 and a little goes a long way so I think it’s going to last us a good long time.

We give Maqnifiscent Grooming and Finishing Splash 5 out of 5 hearts for their wonderful cotton candy fragrance and effectiveness.
 photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png

4 hearts for their excellent prices.
 photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png

And the dogs give it 4 out of 4 paws up for being gentle on their skin and not sticky in their fur.

We really love this spray. Go check them out here and tell them we sent you! 😉

*When ordering custom fragrances, they require that you order two bottles minimum.
