Black & White Sunday: Ella

 photo f65934dc-b7c2-4de3-83f2-98d899451af5.jpg

I’ve been thinking about this incredible dog a lot today.
She would’ve been 7 years old on Friday, the 26th.
I spent Friday morning stressed and nervous; I was forgetting something.
Late afternoon things calmed down and the day was really turning around. It was becoming a really great day after all.
Then I remembered what I had forgotten: Ella’s birthday.
The funny thing (but not “ha ha” funny, strange funny) is, as I remembered what day it was, my mood only improved. It brought a smile to my face. I didn’t expect that. I thought I would cry, I didn’t.
I miss her. I really miss her. But her birthday, her first birthday since her passing, did not darken what was turning out to be a great day, it only made it better. I don’t know why. I can’t explain it. I guess I just… felt, somehow, closer to her in a way.

Today, however, I’ve been battling the waterworks as I look through her pictures. I miss this bossy, noisy, sweet, weird, funny, overly affectionate, gorgeous mutt.

Me, Ella and many piles of clean laundry. Who could ask for more? 😉

Review: Maqnifiscent Grooming and Finishing Splash

 photo cottoncandy4_summer2013.png

It’s summer time, a time for swimming and carnivals and cotton candy.
Delicious cotton candy.

 photo cottoncandyy_summer2013.png

I don’t know about you, but I think cotton candy smells amazing. So sweet and pleasant.
More things should smell like cotton candy.
For example, Collies.
Collies should smell like cotton candy.

Today we’re reviewing Maqnifiscent Grooming and Finishing Splash in the Cotton Candy scent.
Yes, my dogs smell like cotton candy.

 photo cottoncandy3_summer2013.png

Maqnifiscent Grooming and Finishing Splash comes in many different unique scents such as Dark Chocolate, Raspberry Bubble Gum, Pina Colada and others. They even offer custom* fragrances!

 photo cottoncandymaqnifiscent.png

Here’s what they have to say about their product:
“Maqnifiscent Grooming & Finishing Splash is a non-toxic multi-purpose unisex formula that has been designed to keep your pet and home smelling Maqnifiscent. This product instantly eliminates odors and conditions and detangles your pet’s coat while keeping your loved one fresh between baths.  Our preparation contains a long-lasting, non-sticky, first of its kind, scratch-n-smell formula that is immediately reactivated when you comfort your pet or they rub themselves.  All of our fragrances are alcohol and paraben free. It can be used as often as necessary.”
You can read a little more about the company here.

 photo cottoncandysplash.png
Made in the USA! Yay!

When I was first contacted about this product I had my doubts about it’s scratch-n-smell ability. I was worried about what would go into this bottle to give it such an ability. But according to their FAQ page all their splashes are made up of “… a food-grade based gelatin, water, and Virgin Coconut Oil which conditions the skin while keeping the coat shiny.”

Sounds good to me!
And guess what?
It works. And it really does smell like cotton candy. I crave it every time I spray it.
I sprayed some on Petal’s back, chest, each side, and back end and rubbed it in. Probably didn’t need that much, I went a little crazy with it. But it made her smell wonderful and it lasted for several days, nearly a week, even after being rolled through the dirt by Penny. Several times.
And it really does work like a scratch and sniff!
One day my sister buried her face in Petal’s hair and claimed she couldn’t smell the cotton candy. I told her to try petting her a little first. She looked at me like I was insane. “What is she, a scratch and sniff?”
I smirked, we were about to find out, “Just try it!”
She did and her eyes were rather wide when it actually worked.
The more you pet Petal the more she smells like cotton candy.
Love. It.
While the bottle claims that it works best on short haired dogs, it seemed to last longer on Lassie and Petal than it did on Penny. The spray lasted 5-7 days on both Petal and Lassie, but on Penny it only seems to last about 2-3 days. I really feel that that may have something to do with the fact that she hates to be sprayed with anything. So while Lassie and Petal get 3-4 spritz on various parts of their body, Penny gets 1 or even just half a spritz before she runs off. It’s too bad, because she needs it the most if you ask me. Smelly dog.
 photo pennysmelly.png
“I resent that. I do not smell.”

Regardless of that, it is the most effective dog body splash I have ever used on my dogs. It’s also the best smelling one and the most cost effective one, too. I’ve had previous sprays that were $9.99 or more for a tiny little 2 or 4 ounce bottle. This bottle was a very impressive size at 8 fl. oz. for $12.99 and a little goes a long way so I think it’s going to last us a good long time.

We give Maqnifiscent Grooming and Finishing Splash 5 out of 5 hearts for their wonderful cotton candy fragrance and effectiveness.

4 hearts for their excellent prices.
 photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png photo heartrating2.png

And the dogs give it 4 out of 4 paws up for being gentle on their skin and not sticky in their fur.

We really love this spray. Go check them out here and tell them we sent you! 😉

*When ordering custom fragrances, they require that you order two bottles minimum.

Discloser: I was sent one bottle of Maqnifiscent Grooming and Finishing Splash free of charge for review. I was not paid or otherwise encouraged to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are entirely my own based on my experience with the product.

Sleepy Puppy

 photo sleepypenny3.png

Zzzzz.

Penny outgrew her black puppy collar, so I fitted her in one of Ella’s old ones.
A bittersweet moment for me. I used one Ella hadn’t worn in a long while, just to make it easier for myself. A light blue collar with hearts that are wearing off; the collar I bought her from Target before I discovered the durable Dublin Dog collars (that saved me a boatload of money, if only I had discovered them sooner for Ella The Destroyer of Collars).

Penny is so much like Ella that I often wish I could’ve seen how Ella would’ve felt about having a mini-me around.
Would she have loved it? Or would it have annoyed her?
I miss that crazy dog.

Cheater!

Hey everyone, Petal here.
I’ve taken over the keyboard to warn all you doggies that my cousin, Penny, is a dirty, lousy, ankle biting, tail snatching cheater.
 photo pennycutie.png
Don’t think this sweet little face is capable of cheating?
Well, you’re wrong. So wrong, friends.
Just look at the photographic proof!
Example number 1:
Here I am, minding my own business,

 photo petalbusiness.png

Then all of the sudden,

 photo POWsneakattack.png

she came running out of no where and body slammed me!
Thud, right against my ribs.
Good thing I’m a super strong super hero and just laughed it off, like super strong pups do.

 photo laughitoff.png

Example number 2:

Here we are, enjoying a lovely game of chase, but why is Penny running with her mouth wide open like that?

 photo readyforamouthful1.png

Looks like she’s getting ready to take a bite out of something, doesn’t she?
That’s because she is.

 photo caughther2.png

Yes, that IS my tail in her mouth! The little piranha!

 photo cheater3.png

You see, Penny is jealous of my spectacular speed, but instead of simply being faster, she grabs hold of my tail to keep up.
Cheater.

 photo cheater4.png
 photo cheater5.png

Case closed.
Penny is a cheater cheater, poopoo pumpkin eater.
But we still have fun.

Yours truly,

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday: More snow?!

Yesterday
 photo snowhead41613.png
He doesn’t look very impressed with the pile of snow my little sister put on his head, does he?

Today
 photo aprilsnow41713.png
 photo april1713.png
 photo snowwar41713.png

P.S. What do you think of our new look?
Funny enough I changed the blog’s look because I didn’t want a snowy header anymore (I couldn’t change just the header, once I got going I couldn’t stop until it was all changed, haha), I wanted a fresh look. So I revamped the place during yesterday’s snow storm.
I have good timing, I know.

April showers bring May flowers

Sunday night we had some loud, crazy, kinda scary, wind.
Then Monday it rained.
Today it snowed.
Yup, more snow!

Not much, just a light dusting, but that didn’t matter, Petal was still excited.
She kept leading me to the leashes, barking at me and then nudging the leashes with her nose.
Who could say no to that?
Not me, that’s for sure.

 photo april92013.png
Today looks like this.

So I bundled up and took them outside.
Despite all the layers I wore, I still nearly froze (the wind was ice cold).
But it was worth it to watch them race around the yard.

 photo zoominpetal4913.png
 photo chasin4913.png

Petal and Penny played “circle around the weird box thing that’s been here way longer than any of us have!”
Petal won, as always. Penny cried, as always.
She’s still not as fast as Petal.

 photo pennyzoomin4913.png
Ignore the weeds. I gotta get those pulled.

They also played fetch…
 photo petalskips.png
I swear Petal knows how to skip. ;P

 photo ballpenpet4913.png

Okay, so Penny played fetch, Petal just ran along beside her.
Petal says it’s only fair to let Penny win at something. 😉

 photo pennysearslove.png
Look at those ears!

And what did Lassie do, you ask?
He poked around the yard a little, peeing here and there, but mostly he just followed me around, enjoying the wind,
 photo enjoywind4913.png
and the camera. 😉

Now I’m ready for a nap.

A Wild Penny

What is this?

 photo awildpenny.png

It’s a wild Penny Pirana!
(Yeah, we’re working on what she can and cannot sink her teeth into: Yes you can chew on that toy. No you cannot chew on my fingers).

She is growing like a weed.
When she first got here she was shorter than our 20 pound, giant cat and then suddenly she woke up with these long legs and is now taller than the cat.
I hope my cousin still recognizes her. 😉

Delectable Collie Fluff

I hold in my hand a ball of Collie fluff…

 photo colliefluff.png

but good luck convincing a certain puppy of that.
Penny is convinced it’s not just “Collie fluff”, she’s convinced it’s a delicious and wonderful toy/treat!

 photo yummycolliefluff.png
“It’s filled with happiness and joy.
Don’t take it from me.”

I’m always fishing Collie hair out of her mouth.
She stalks me while I brush Lassie and Petal.
Her eyes and head follow the brush’s every move and the second I turn it around to pull out the fluff, she bounces, grabs a mouthful straight from the prickly pin brush, and runs off with it.
She pulls it apart, chews on it, pulls it apart again, and chews some more until it’s a big, slobbery, knot of nastiness hanging out of the side of her mouth, which I have to pick off.
Gross.

It’s funny, annoying and gross all at once.
