Monday Mischief: Teasing

Petal’s favorite game is Keep Away. A game that Lassie proudly taught her.

Basically, she enjoys teasing me, just like Lassie did.

MMlookingfor MMtoobadmine

I was ready to reach out and grab that toy, I was on the ground and everything, when she swoops in and snatches it, leaving me with nothing but the perfect opportunity to photograph her favorite game.

Little stinker!

If that’s not enough mischief for you, I can also say with 83% certainty, that if I were ever shrunken down to the size of a bug, she would squish me.

Maybe not on purpose, but still.

Always asking the important questions. 😉

Black & White Sunday: This morning

BWsundaymorning1 BWsundaymorning2 BWsundaymorning3 BWsundaymorning4

Good morning everyone! Petal has eaten breakfast, brushed her teeth, did some training, played outside with me and posed for pictures. Now we’re curled up on the couch together. I’m watching Harry Potter (squee!) and Petal is catching up on some sleep. We had five little visitors from the ages of 7-1 stay with us from Thursday afternoon until yesterday afternoon and we’re dog-tired now! We’ll be kicking back for the rest of this Sunday.

What are you guys doing this Sunday? Staying in or venturing out?

Grab Our Badge!

We’re joining the Black and White Sunday blog hop hosted by Dachshund Nola and Sugar the Golden Retriever.

Pet Blogger Challenge 2014: Our first!

I’m posting this at 8:20PM Friday evening. I wanted to post it at 10 or 11AM. That’s how busy my day has been, haha.

Anyway…

I’m almost embarrassed to say I’ve never done this before, even though I’ve been blogging almost since this was started. I knew about the last… two? of them, but didn’t participate. Why? I don’t know, there were so many popular blogs participating in it and feeling like I was still a newbie blogger, I guess I felt a little star struck and too shy to do it. I know, I’m silly.

But this year I’m doing it! So… here we go.

1. How long have you been blogging? Please tell us why you started blogging, and, for anyone stopping by for the first time, give us a quick description of what your blog is about.

I have been blogging for… *consults the archives* DANG, it’ll be 4 years in June! I started blogging because my stringy, almost Webkinz looking, puppy had oh so much personality and sass as she got older.

webkinzpetal2010

petal2010lovedby

Petal Puppy. 2010.

Would you believe that Petal was once a very quiet, reserved, sweet little puppy? Neither would I if I hadn’t known her then, but she was, and as she out grew that some seriously hilarious stuff started happening. Stuff I wanted to remember. It got me thinking of all the silly stuff Lassie and Ella did as well and I thought, “These 3 need a blog!” and thus Two Collies and a Mutt was born. I also, admittedly, wanted to have a place to show off my cute dogs and talk nonstop about them. I also wanted to mess around with web design, which is why my blog layout changed so frequently. I had too much fun with Blogger’s template customizer.

2colliesmuttlovedby

Now for those of you who may be new and are now scratching your heads and going, “Two Collies and a Mutt? I thought this was Loved By A Collie?” It is. In August of 2012 Ella, our “Mutt”, passed away very suddenly. I took a blogging break and then went right back to Two Collies and a Mutt, leaving the “and a Mutt” in honor of our Ella mutt.

A year, almost to the very day, after Ella’s passing, Lassie passed away. Lassie was my heart dog, my best friend, my strength. I didn’t even get to say goodbye to him, like I did with Ella. His death has been extremely hard to cope with. I stopped blogging, among many other things. Somedays I would think, “I’ll go back to it one day.” but most days I hated my blog and was never going back to it.

One day, while crying over my boy, I had the idea that if I ever were going to blog again, I would start a new one, on WordPress. I would bring all my posts from Two Collies and a Mutt over to the new blog, of course, but I was going to make a huge change. I wanted a new name. A name that would pay tribute to my incredible best friend. I decided on Loved By A Collie (you can read more about that here or here). This blog is dedicated to Lassie and the many ways he changed my life forever. I made this blog to show Lassie that I would do my best to keep going. This blog is about my love for collies, my love for Lassie, for Ella, for Petal and for any future collie or other dog that walks into my life. This blog is for sharing pictures and stories of my loves. It’s about our training successes and life’s adventures and, unfortunately, life’s hard times too.

2. Name one thing about your blog, or one blogging goal that you accomplished during 2013, that made you most proud.

On the last day of November 2013 I decided that I was going to start blogging again and I was going to get Loved By A Collie up and running on December 8th, mine and Lassie’s 9th anniversary. It took a lot of work and frustration and moments of, “Forget it! I can’t do this!” But I did it. I did it because I wanted to do it for Lassie. That dog could motivate me to do anything. I’m very proud that I stuck with that goal and got all switched over to a whole new blog within a week. I’m proud to say that Lassie is still my motivation.

3. When you look at the post you wrote for last year’s Pet Blogger Challenge, or just think back over the past year, what about blogging has changed the most for you?

I didn’t do the Pet Blogger Challenge last year, but thinking back over the past year, a lot of changes have been made. Everything about blogging changed for me. Everything in my life changed after Lassie’s passing. What changed the most for me is two things, one positive and one not positive change, unfortunately. The positive: I found the courage to start again and get a new blog rolling! The negative: I lost my love for blogging. I’m trying to get it back, but I still cannot honestly say that I love it. Hopefully one day I can love it again. I can say that I love my blog itself. I love the name, the layout, WordPress, who this blog is dedicated too and I really love the logo that I made myself out of Lassie’s picture. So hopefully one day I can love the actual blogging part again, but for now I just like it and that’s enough for now.

4. What lessons have you learned this year – from other blogs, or through your own experience – that could help us all with our own sites?

I learned/am still learning to be SOCIAL! Comment on other blogs, read other blogs and comment when you do. Ask your readers questions and for advice. Reply to comments left on your blog posts and other social media platforms you may have. Find ways to engage with people.

If you could ask the pet blogging community for help with one challenge you’re having with your blog, what would it be?

Darn it. I totally had one in mind a few days ago, I should’ve wrote it down because I completely forgot it! Umm, this wasn’t the question I had, but it’s a good one (and yeah, it’s inspired by the question that’s coming up next). Do you have any suggestions for bringing more traffic to your blog?

5. What have you found to be the best ways to bring more traffic to your blog, other than by writing great content?

I have found that participating in blog hops and commenting on other blogs works well for bringing in traffic. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Google+ work too.

6. How much time to do you spend publicizing your blog, and do you think you should spend more or less in the coming year?

I share my posts to my Facebook page, Twitter, Google+ and occasionally my Instagram as well. I post photos on Instagram pretty regularly and share them onto Facebook and Twitter. I do my best to reply to every comment my Facebook followers/fans/likers/homies make. Same goes for comments made on my Instagram pictures. I don’t spend much time on Twitter, partly because something about it is a little bit overwhelming for me. I tend to just share my Instagram pictures and follow back anyone who follows me and that’s like… it for Twitter. I share my posts on Google+ and sometimes I “+1” other people’s posts, but Google+ bugs me, so I don’t spend much time on it. I hardly ever get on Pinterest and don’t even have one specifically for the blog because… I have a Pinterest problem. Once I’m on Pinterest, I’m there for hours and that’s not good. Haha!

I should probably spend more time publicizing my blog, but I often get overwhelmed by all the different social media platforms out there! Hey, do any of you awesome people have tips for that? Is it worth having a Pinterest account for your blog?

7. How do you gauge whether or not what you’re writing is appealing to your audience?

…. I don’t. Is that bad? I basically go, “Well I like it, so I’m sure at least two other people might like it too. Maybe. But if not, oh well, I still like it.” If I don’t like it, other people will most likely dislike it as well, because they’ll likely pick up on my lack of enthusiasm.

How do you know when it’s time to let go of a feature or theme that you’ve been writing about for a while?

Currently, I don’t have any themes or features of my own. I do like to participate in Wordless Wednesday and Black & White Sunday every week and I recently started participating in others as well. I suppose if I did have a feature or theme of my own that I wrote about on a regular basis, I would know it was time to let it go if I got bored of it or no longer enjoyed it, for whatever reason. If the writer doesn’t enjoy it, neither will the readers.

8. When you’re visiting other blogs, what inspires you to comment on a post rather than just reading and moving on?

Good question. I’m HORRIBLE about reading and moving on. I do it way too often and I, personally, think it’s rude of me to do, so I’m working on not doing that anymore. If I took the time to read it, I can take the time to comment on it. But things that inspire me to comment would be if the writer was asking for advice. I love to help so if someone is asking for advice on a subject I know fairly well, I usually can’t resist sharing my advice/tips. I also like it when they ask a question about my dog that goes along with their post. Like, for example, say they posted “My dog LOVES his tennis ball! It’s his favorite toy! What’s your dog’s favorite toy?” I love to comment with an answer because I love to babble about Petal. So any opportunity to do so is awesome. 😉 Also, I’m a huge sucker for photography. Have a pretty photo in your post? I can’t resist commenting to tell you how pretty it is. Whether it’s your dog/pet in a beautiful landscape or a pretty/interesting close up of your dog/pet, I can’t resist the pictures, it’s basically like bribing a child with candy.

9. Do you do product reviews and/or giveaways?

I do! I really enjoy it too. I don’t know why, I guess I just like having an excuse to talk even more about dog stuff. 😉

If so, what do you find works best, and what doesn’t work at all?

I have found that, for giveaways, Rafflecopter makes it soooo much easier to record and keep track of entries and who did what (i.e., so and so Tweeted about this giveaway and liked you on Facebook, earning them 2 (or whatever) entries, while such and such only Tweeted, earning them just 1 entry). Plus it’ll pick a winner, at random, for you and you can set it up to close entry on a certain day and time. It’s just awesome.

For reviews, I try to write my reviews in a way that I, as a reader and pet supply consumer, not a reviewer, would appreciate. For me, personally, I don’t like reviews that are just, “Yeah. We liked it. Buy it!” I like more details. WHY did you like it? HOW does it work? WHERE did it come from? WHO would it work for?
I  like to have an idea of the size of the product, especially when it comes to treats or chews, so images of the product next to your pet or coins or a ruler or a pen are very helpful. Something that I, admittedly, forget to do. But it really is nice to have that visual. I like to have pictures of the product. Me likey the pictures.

I also decided that if I don’t feel comfortable about reviewing a certain product, I’m going to just say no. There was one product that I was contacted about reviewing and I did want to review it, but I was a little nervous about it because there was certain information about the product that was withheld from me. I should’ve told them I wasn’t comfortable with that and therefore not interested, but I didn’t want to be rude (I realize now that that wouldn’t have been rude, I could’ve been politely honest about it). I said yes and I have to say, that was the hardest review I’ve ever had to do. I wanted to be honest with my readers, but I didn’t want to bash the product, that just didn’t seem right. I don’t like doing that and I don’t want to write posts that I don’t like.

10. When writer’s block strikes and you’re feeling dog-tired, how do you recharge?

You guys are going to get sick of this answer, but: PICTURES. Photos inspire me. Taking pictures, looking through my photos, looking at other people’s photos. Instagram is a great source of inspiration for me as are my fellow pet bloggers. Getting out of the house is a great help to. I’ll take Petal out and about and sometimes I come across something that inspires a blog post or sometimes I don’t, instead I just clear my head and that helps too. Or doing something completely unrelated to blogging.

11. Have you ever taken a break from your blog? How did that go?

Yes. I felt I had to after lossing Lassie. For me, it went very well. I needed it more than I realized. For my blog, not so well. But it wasn’t as bad as I expected. I can honestly say it was worth it and I don’t regret the break I took.

Have you ever thought about quitting your blog altogether? What makes you stay?

Yes. As I said above, I had a hard time even thinking about going back to Two Collies and a Mutt and thought about making my break permanent. What made me come back and start anew was you guys, as totally sappy as that sounds. You guys are seriously incredible and I realized one day that I did not want to remove myself from this amazing community. I want to be a part of it, through the ups and the downs, as hard as they are. You guys have been nothing but kind, supportive, and patient with me. I truly appreciate it and I think the least I can do is be that for you guys in return. That’s why I came back.

12. What goals do you have for your blog in 2014?

To really love it again. I like it, I enjoy it even, but I want to looove it like I use to. I would also love to build a bigger audience. I’m also going to try to participate more in the fun challenges/themes you guys come up with.

Thank you Amy of Go Pet Friendly and Edie of Will My Dog Hate Me? for hosting this fun challenge! :)

I’ll close with another Petal puppy picture, just because.

Here! Catch!

On Instagram there is this hashtag series called #catchseries = pictures of dogs preparing to catch a tasty treat. There are some seriously hilarious and incredible pictures that have come out of this hashtag. I highly recommend checking it out if you’re an Instagram user! While you’re at it check out the user @bordernerd, the clever mind behind #catchseries.

Now this series had me wanting to try this with Petal. But, well, I kept forgetting to.
Until last month when we were outside playing in the snow. Normally a treat is tossed for your dog to catch, but some fresh powdery snow would work just as well, right?

I gave it a try, but didn’t expect to succeed on our first try. I was thrilled when I found that we had! I looked like a lunatic sitting outside in the snow laughing hysterically at my camera.

The cause of my manic laughter:

WMpetsnowcatch1

Part of what made it so funny is that she didn’t even catch it! Her mouth is so wide, so I got this! Yet it was a complete and total miss.

We tried again and Petal had her fight face on:

WMpetsnowcatch2Okay, so it was more like an incredibly sweet little smile. But whatever.
She gave it her all,

WMpetsnowcatch3Looks like it’s going straight for her mouth, right? No WAY she could miss that one!

She did.

My dog can’t catch, guys.

We’ll blame her overbite.

overbitepet

In other news, we’re expecting to get some rain and snow today. We’re hoping for more snow than rain! We think snow is more fun than mud. 😉

Also, I’m (hopefully, if I can give at least half-decent answers to the questions, lol) participating in the Pet Blogger Challenge tomorrow! It’ll be my first time participating in it. Is it silly that I almost feel a little nervous about it?
Are you participating? Are you new to it or have you done it before?

Tasty Tuesday: Tasty Reviews

Today is our first time joining the Tasty Tuesday blog hop. This blog hop is hosted by Sugar the Golden Retriever and Kol’s Notes. Go check them out to learn more!

Before we tell you all about some super tasty treats, we must apologize to Chewy.com for the major delay in posting this review. I’m incredibly sorry to everyone at Chewy for the delay. I can’t thank you all enough for your kindness, patience and understanding. I hope you guys can forgive me for the delay in reviewing these products.

Now for the review. We have freeze dried dog treats, freeze dried dog food, and canned cat food. Yes, you read that right, cat food!

Let’s start with the treats.
reviewNVIminitreats

These are Nature’s Variety Instinct Raw Boost Minis from Chewy.com. Or chicken flavored freeze dried raw dog treats.

The ingredients are:
“Chicken (Including Ground Chicken Bone), Turkey, Turkey Liver, Turkey Heart, Pumpkinseeds, Apples, Carrots, Butternut Squash, Ground Flaxseed, Montmorillonite Clay, Broccoli, Lettuce, Spinach, Dried Kelp, Apple Cider Vinegar, Parsley, Honey, Salmon Oil, Mixed Tocopherols, Olive Oil, Rosemary Extract, Blueberries, Alfalfa Sprouts, Persimmons, Inulin, Rosemary, Sage, Clove”

They’re grain free, contain no corn, wheat, soy, or gluten. They come in a 3.25 ounce resealable (score!) bag.

Their size and the fact that they’re low in calories (only 2 calories per piece!) make them perfect for training! They can be crumbly, but nothing too bad. They’re soft and delicious (according to Petal, cousin Penny, and even the cat cousins; I did not try them, so you’ll just have to take their word for it).

reviewpetalNVItreats

Not only are they perfect for training, but they’re great to bribe a finicky pet to eat! Petal and Penny never need bribes to finish a meal, but Harriet the cat needs a bribe from time to time. She was absolutely bonkers for these treats. She even snatched them out of my pocket, which you can see here in this video:

Yeah, I helped her out a little. It was either help her or suffer her wrath. Eep.

Petal ADORED these treats, everyone did! I liked that they’re low in calories, made in the USA, came in a resealable bag, and were a huge crowd pleaser.

Also, for you cat owners, they do make cat treats too!

Next up is Orijen Freeze Dried dog food from Chewy.com. Petal tried the Tundra version which is made with a variety of venison, elk, bison, quail and steelhead trout.

reviewharriettundra

Harriet wants to know why Petal gets all the good stuff.

We received a 6 ounce bag of medallions (approximately 12 medallions). Their key benefits, as listed on Chewy.com are:

Key Benefits

  • High-protein, low-carbohydrate formula
  • Freeze-dried to lock in flavor and nutritional value
  • Preservative-free
  • Balanced meal perfect for daily feeding
You can find the ingredient list here.
The feeding instructions only go up to a dog of 33 pounds with the suggestion of feeding an additional 1 1/2 medallions per additional 11 pounds. A 33 pound dog would eat about 7 medallions a day, Petal is just shy of 50. So Petal would need about 9.25 – 9.5 medallions a day. Since I didn’t want to use the whole bag in one day, I just gave Petal one mediallion a day in addition to her regular food (homemade).
revieworijenfreezedriedfood
Rehydrating instructions as listed on the side of the bag:
  1. Place Orijen medallions into a clean dish and break into quarters.
  2. Pour 1/4 cup of warm water over each medallion. Water should be warm to the touch but not hot, around 55°C/130°F is ideal.
  3. Stirring will speed hydration time.
  4. Medallions will rehydrate in 3-5 minutes and are best served when soft throughout.

I followed the instructions and found them to be true, though I only ever rehydrated one medallion at a time. I’m not sure if it would make a difference in time if you were to rehydrate several. I’m sure it wouldn’t so long as you added 1/4 cup of water for each medallion. For the sake of the photo I warmed a quarter cup of water in a tea kettle, but I’m sure warm water from the tap would work just as well.

Personally I thought they were a little bit stinky, but Petal L-O-V-E-D it. I gave her one every evening with her usual food until they were gone (so almost for 2 full weeks, but not quite). I was expecting, when she first tried one, for her to have a little bit of an upset stomach, just because it was new, but that never happened. Likely because she never ate more than one at a time, but even so, I was impressed.

This food would be far too expensive for me to feed to Petal exclusively and, I’ll be honest, I would never buy it for that purpose. However, I have no problem with the idea of buying it for her as an occasional treat to have with her usual meal, since she enjoyed it SO much. The ingredients are great, it’s a breeze to prepare, and Petal really loved it. Bu it’s too pricey for us to feed exclusively or on a regular basis.

Now for the cat food!

The cats of the house got to taste-test Nature’s Variety: Pride by Instinct canned cat food from Chewy.com.

By cats of the house, I mean two out of three of them, one of them is incredibly stubborn and won’t eat canned food unless it’s Friskies. Since he’s been living in this house much longer than any of us, he gets what he wants (most of the time).

The girls, however, were eager to taste this new food.

We got 4 3oz cans. 2 in the chicken flavor and 2 in the salmon flavor. 1 flaked and 1 minced in each flavor.

reviewpridecatfood

Pride is a grain-free and gluten-free cat food. There’s no corn, wheat, or soy and they’re made in the USA!

Plus check out the ridiculously adorable labels and flavor names. So. Dang. Cute.

reviewcatfoodtesters

The girls loved both flavors, but Harriet loved the chicken flavor best while Moonlight (Moony for short) simply loved going back and forth between the two flavors. She would take one bite of the chicken, then a bite of the salmon, then back to chicken, then back to salmon. It was too funny. They loved it so much that I added Nature’s Variety to their regular, daily diet. I added a different line from Nature’s Variety though, simply because it agreed with my budget better than the Pride line. If it wasn’t for that, I would’ve added Pride specifically.

The kitties simply loved this food. It was a huge hit. These finicky cats gobbled up every last meaty bite and licked up every drop of delicious gravy. It is on the pricey side if you have multiple cats though. Still, we would highly recommend it to our cat friends!

As for Chewy.com, we can not recommend them enough. They’re wonderful people for so many reasons. They’re generous and kind and fantastic to work with. I’m saying this as both a reviewer and a regular customer. I purchase from Chewy.com on a monthly basis. They have the best prices on the cat food we feed, the kibble cousin Penny eats and the supplements I give Petal. We also buy many of our other pet supplies from Chewy.

I’ve only had to contact customer service twice and both times they were very kind and very prompt. On one occasion I had to contact them about some canned cat food I ordered. The sent me the exact flavor and brand I had ordered, but it was canned dog food rather than cat food. I emailed them to let them know of the mix up and they promptly sent out the cat food and instead of asking for the case of canned dog food back, they told me to donate the dog food to a local shelter or rescue group. I was very touched by that and so was the rescue group I donated it to. They were very grateful and hopeful that the canned food would help bribe some of the dogs in their care to take their medications. Thank you Chewy.com!

Positive Training Blog Hop: “Get the Light!”

Our friends Dachshund Nola, Cascadian Nomads, and Tenacious Little Terrier came up with the brilliant idea to host a blog hop once a month to talk about Positive Training. You can learn more about the hop at any 3 of the hosts’ blogs.

I’ve been using Positive Training since I was 13 and Lassie was just a 2 month old ball of fluffy, chubby love. I used Positive Training techniques, without even realizing it, with both Lassie and Ella. When I added Petal to the family I started using it even more and decided to learn how to use a clicker as well. Best dollar I ever spent. Petal LOVES the clicker and food and learning. She’s the perfect student, if I do say so myself. Though I will say that she often gets over eager and tries to perform tricks before I ask for them, which doesn’t work because how can she do what I haven’t asked her to do yet? She can’t, so she ends up doing everything that I might ask, which leads to her looking rather silly and feeling confused. I simply ignore this until she calms down and gives me her full attention, then we get to work.

Today I thought I would share a trick I taught Petal when she was a puppy. It was a trick I taught her just for fun. Just to see if I could do it. I knew Petal could do it, easy, but I wasn’t so sure I could figure out how to train it. The trick was “Get the Light” aka turn off the light. To accomplish this she would have to jump up to the light switch and paw it just right to turn the light off. She already knew “touch” so we built on that.
I held my hand against the wall and asked her to “touch” it. I clicked and treated her when she did so. We did this a couple of times before I started removing my hand right before she could touch it, making her touch the wall instead. Click and treat. I was going to slowly have her make her way up the wall, making her touch a little higher and a little higher until we got to the light switch, but she got bored and I got bored, so we jumped ahead.
Literally.
I started encouraging her to jump up onto the wall, clicking and treating every time she jumped up, whether she touched the wall or not. Once she got that down, I only clicked and treated when her paw made contact with the wall, extra praise and treats if she touched the frame around the light switch, which had a treat taped to it. Yes, I taped a dog treat to the light switch to her encourage her to gravitate towards the switch. That probably wasn’t necessary but it was amusing and it did bring her attention to the switch, making her aware of it. Once she mastered touching the wall and sniffing the light switch, I only clicked and treated when her paw touched the frame around the light switch. If she happened to pull the switch down as she touched the frame she got LOADS of praise and treats. Eventually I started clicking and treating only when she turned the light off.

I have a video of the end result. It was recorded a day or two after Petal learned the trick (after a day or two of training).

As the description reminded me, she was only 8 months old!
Also, please ignore my incredibly annoying voice.

It’s been a few months since she learned any new tricks, but her most recently learned tricks are High Five!, Spin, and Bow. We’ve started working on Beg/Sit Pretty just today. High Five! is her favorite trick. She practically taught it to herself a few months ago (in September maybe?) and I can tell it’s her favorite because she’ll consistently do it for free (no treat) and she’ll even do it for my family members, not just me. 😉
